Lotta På Liseberg

Eric På Liseberg

by scandipop on August 10, 2010

Last night saw the latest development in the gradual transformation of Eric Saade from popstar to superstar! I mean, c’mon – the performance of ‘Masquerade’ below is quite frankly amazing. It’s his most accomplished television performance since ‘Manboy’ at Melodifestivalen. Excellent stage show, great live vocals, complicated choreography, and he looks terrific throughout. This young star has yet to put a foot wrong, and we’re loving every minute of his current dominance of the pure pop scene in Sweden. Both he, and his music deserve it.

He performed both ‘Masquerade’ and ‘Break Of Dawn’ at last night’s Lotta På Liseberg, the last of the season (and Lotta’s last season if rumours in the Swedish press are to be believed – which, normally they aren’t, to be fair!). And you can watch both below.

Some live music from Sweden…

by scandipop on August 7, 2010

After getting off to an amazing start, pop wise, the summer singalong festivals in Sweden have been a bit lacklustre in recent weeks, with very few performances or artists that we could get excited about. Hence why we haven’t really written about them with the same gusto that we started out with earlier in the summer. Nevertheless, the last two weeks of Sommarkrysset, Allsång På Skansen, and Lotta På Liseberg, HAVE thrown up a few gems that we think deserve to be noticed outside of the youtube archives, so here they are below;

We posted this already in a Le Kid article earlier in the week, but it wouldn’t be fair not to include them in a round up of the best performances of the last few weeks. This delivery of ‘Mercy Mercy’ is immense in so many ways.

Ever the showman, Salem Al Fakir captivated the audience of Allsång På Skansen when he played there two weeks ago. We’ve seen him live a couple of times this year, and watching him never gets boring. Perhaps the organisers suspected this, and they allowed him to do three songs. ’4 o Clock’ and ‘I’m So Happy’ in particular demonstrate how loveable and special a performer he is, and of course ‘Keep On Walking’ is still magical.

Injecting a bit of warmth into what was an otherwise wet Tuesday, Linda Sundblad did two songs at Allsång På Skansen. Not ‘Let’s Dance’ unfortunately, but her other single ’2 All My Girls’, and a surprisingly beautiful version of ‘Over The Rainbow’. Who knew she had it in her?!

Martin Stenmarck is enjoying something of a minor hit in Sweden right now with his cover of Keane’s ‘Everybody’s Changing’. We like it, but we’re still not sure how we feel about how he’s looking in the clip below. Normally to our eyes, he’s one of the hottest guys in Sweden! But is that guyliner he’s wearing?

Christian Falk is a multi talented and world renowned dance producer, and now his daughter Vanessa is being launched in Sweden. She’s previously provided a couple of vocals for Daddy’s tracks, but ‘Private Party’ seems to be her big launch, cemented with this performance last week. We like it, but we’re looking forward to hearing the studio version fully, before we judge it completely. Still, it seems like she could be an exciting artist to look out for.

AND FINALLY, here are two more performances from Sommarkrysset that you should check out. Marie Serneholt and Sebastian Karlsson have been treading the boards for most of this year in the Swedish production of Grease. Marie is an adorable Sandy and Sebastian is an unlikely but great Danny. They performed the Swedish language version of ‘Summer Loving’ at Sommarkrysset last weekend.

Lastly, Ankie Bagger and Peter Gustafsson took their Stockholm Pride duties mainstream last weekend also, when they sang the official anthem of the festival, ‘Secret Weapon’, at Sommarkrysset too. Uber camp, but uber fabulous with it. We loved every minute of it!

A Swedish classic: ‘En Sån Karl’

by scandipop on August 4, 2010

Since moving to Sweden six months ago (it’ll be six months exactly on Friday!) there’s obviously been lots of great music that we’ve discovered, that we never knew about before. Both new and old. But there’s one song in particular that we’ve fallen head over heels in love with. It’s considered a Swedish classic – first released in 1967, but since then subject to a hugely successful cover version. It’s a staple for Dansbands, is often performed at the likes of Allsång På Skansen and Lotta På Liseberg, and we’ve even heard it played in clubs! And danced accordingly, naturally. Although whilst the song has been adopted as Swedish by the Swedes, it’s actually a translation of an English hit from the year before in 1966, ‘Just Like A Man’ by Emma Rede.

We first heard ‘En Sån Karl’ in its cover version incarnation. Back in the early nineties, Anne-Lie Rydé released a covers album of Sweden’s favourite schlager songs of yesteryear, ‘Stulna Kyssar’. Along with her cover of Towa Carson’s ‘All Har Glömt’, ‘En Sån Karl’ was the breakthrough hit – in terms of popularity. It’s those two songs that she still performs at her gigs and PA’s. In fact it was her performance of it at this year’s Love Stockholm event that introduced us to it. Here’s Anne-Lie’s recording (ignore the spelling mistakes in the video title!);

Doesn’t it sound like Christmas?!!!

It’s got all the elements of schlager that we love so much. It’s just so big and bold. Those melodies HAVE to be screeched to be reached (hence Anne-Lie was always going to do the song justice!). And the music simultaneously makes you powerless to resist moving, and builds into a crescendo of internal euphoria. QUITE the effect! Anne-Lie’s version is still probably our favourite. Those vocals are immense, and she really does make the song her own – putting her unique, charming, and acceptable brand of crazy onto it. In hindsight, we’ve also come to the conclusion/realisation that her 2004 Melodifestivalen comeback with ‘Säg At Du Har Ångrat Dig’ was clearly tailored specifically to capitalise on the popularity of her version of ‘En Sån Karl’. It sounds like the same song! The instrumentation and backing vocal melodies are identical. Perhaps it was cheeky and cynical, or perhaps it was simply Anne-Lie paying a respectable nod to a certain section of her fanbase. But either way, we don’t care – both songs are 10/10 moments for us, and we love them!

But what about the original? Well usually when we fall for a song that we later find out is a cover version, we always then listen to the original knowing that we probably won’t like it as much (and eventually being made feel like a heathen as a result, when we speak about it to somebody a lot older!). But with ‘En Sån Karl’ that wasn’t the case. We love the original by Lill Lindfors as much as Anne-Lie’s fine foray. Perhaps that’s because it’s schlager music – a genre which is so old fashioned that it’s become timeless. A musical legacy that can throw out a song in 1970 and one in 2010 without them sounding any more than a decade apart!

Lill’s vocal is another treat for the ears, and for the mind. She really performs the lyrics (more on the lyrics later), and to accompany the audio, you’re left summoning the image of a bored and jaded housewife, herself conjuring up an image of a ‘Karl’ – a Swedish word for a classically masculine specimen of a man! Her prescription medicated dry delivery of the verses is then complimented by her gin soaked ecstatic excitement in the chorus. Have a listen;

Whilst it requires a certain amount of talent to pull off the vocals like the two aforementioned ladies both do, that hasn’t stopped the song becoming a huge karaoke favourite. Probably because it’s a whole lot of fun attempting it. Sounding slightly drunk on the verses is expected anyway, and letting rip for the chorus is really the only way to do it. It’s near impossible to sing this without a huge smile on your face. Take the below youtube clip as the absolute perfect example. At Allsång På Skansen 2008, the always amazing Nina Söderquist was tasked with bringing the song to life. No small task for a rookie, but Nina threw herself into it with thoroughly enjoyable results. The crazy eyes matched with the calm swagger fits the song perfectly. And look at how much fun the audience have when it’s their turn to join in;

The song’s fun quota is overloaded anyway by its lyrics. It’s all about a woman’s appreciation for her big strong manly guy. Despite his faults – he lies and he drinks – he’s the perfect guy for looking after her. As we mentioned before, the lyrics are best delivered by dead pan Lill Lindfors, but we particularly like Anne-Lie Rydé’s take on the theme near the end. The listener hears her purr her appreciation for her man out loud, sighing contentedly until she lets out a shrill gasp of relief at the very end. Now there’s a mental image and a half for you!

Just a few weeks ago, Lotta Engberg performed ‘En Sån Karl’ at her own Lotta På Liseberg show, with a performance that played up to the song’s theme.

Brilliant stuff!

The most recently recorded take on the classic was released on the debut album of dansband girlband, Face 84 (most famous for Melodifestivalen 2008′s ‘Alla Gamla X’). Here the song is brought bang up to date. Despite the dramatics being toned down for the girls and almost neutralised, it’s still an enjoyable listen. Possibly because the melody is for once allowed to shine through without the vocal aerobics of Face 84′s predecessors. You can find their album on Spotify (possibly only in Sweden though, we’re not sure).

We could happily listen to it in many more forms though, and we hope that it continues to be kept alive long into the future.

Lotta Fun!

by scandipop on July 27, 2010

Last night’s Lotta På Liseberg wasn’t the most exciting line up for pop fans – with Andreas Johnson and Cookies n’ Beans headlining the bill. However it did throw up (perhaps quite literally) this utter treat for the eyes and ears!

Timoteij Kom to Lotta På Liseberg!

by scandipop on July 20, 2010

Lotta På Liseberg took place again last night, and had a fairly poptastic line up of Timoteij, Måns Zelmerlow, and Maria Haukaas Storeng. Timoteij did ‘Kom’ and new single ‘Högt Över Ängarna’. Lead singer Cecilia, has freshly crimped hair for the occasion! And then Måns and Maria did their duet from earlier in the year, ‘Precious To Me’.

Allsång På Skansen is on tonight in Stockholm, but we’re giving it a miss for the first time this year, as we don’t really fancy seeing any of the artists (aside from Salem Al Fakir, but we saw him last month at Love Stockholm). You can check out who is performing here though, and watch it live tonight at 7pm UK time.

Last night’s Lotta På Liseberg

by scandipop on July 13, 2010

As well as the performance of Sanna Nielsen’s brand new single ‘A Part Of Me’ that we wrote about earlier today, here are the other notable performances from last night’s Lotta På Liseberg. ‘Underbart’ by Kalle Moraeus (always a treat for the ears!) and ‘Devotion’ by Sanna Nielsen. Plus below that is Jessica Andersson’s performance of ‘I Did It For Love’ from the previous week.

Tonight we’re off to Allsång På Skansen again! Darin, Timoteij, and KIKKI DANIELSSON are performing. Plus…erm…the Cotton Eye Joe Show?! Full report here tomorrow of course. And as always you can follow us on twitter for live updates.

It’s the new Sanna Nielsen single!

by scandipop on July 13, 2010

Last night at Lotta På Liseberg, Sanna Nielsen performed her brand new single for the very first time. It’s called ‘A Part Of Me’ and we like it. A lot!

It’s a mid-tempo schlager ballad. We say schlager because the melodies are so typically brilliantly schlager. The chorus has a melody that tweaks at the heart strings, particularly since it’s accompanied by uber love lyrics. And of course, it wouldn’t be schlager without a key change for the last chorus. A key change which is attempted, and achieved, with some gusto by Sanna herself in this performance.

We really do love Sanna Nielsen. She hasn’t put a foot wrong musically since 2007!

Linda & Velvet, then Linda again!

by scandipop on June 29, 2010

Nothing brightens up our day like a new performance of ’Victorious’ by Linda Bengtzing and Velvet. And so today’s shining on full wattage thanks to last night’s Lotta På Liseberg. ‘Victorious’ was performed in all its glory amongst a crowd of pop loving Swedes, and with the gorgeous summer sun beaming over the stage like the ecclesiastical vision those two ladies really are together!

Linda came back later for a sing-a-long medley of all of her Melodifestivalen schlager hits, which was thoroughly charming. And they really are three of the best songs ever to grace that competition.

Tonight we’re MEGA excited about our first ever visit to Allsang På Skansen in Stockholm, which is a similar show to Lotta På Liseberg. After years of having to watch the performances hunched over a tiny youtube screen, we’ll be seeing it live! And tonight’s show features Carola, Anna Bergendahl, and The Ark amongst others!

Full report here tomorrow.

Lotta På Liseberg is here!

by scandipop on June 22, 2010

The first Lotta På Liseberg took place last night in Gothenburg. And so begins a summer of singalong schlager, with this and Ållsang På Skansen. And every week we’ll be posting here our favourite performance from that week’s shows.

Last night’s show had Charlotte Perrelli and Markoolio amongst others. Charlotte Perrelli performed ‘Hero’, ‘Summer Nights’ and she took part in two schlager medleys along with Markoolio, Lisa Nilsson, and Lotta Engberg herself. In the bottom clip below, she sings ‘Tusen Och En Natt’, and Markoolio and Lotta team up on ’Värsta Schlagern’! Bliss!

If the videos aren’t embedding properly for you (TV4′s videos can be funny sometimes), the direct links are below too.

Whole Lotta Music!

by scandipop on June 10, 2010

Yet more live music shows have been announced for Sweden. This time it’s the turn of Lotta På Liseberg. The annual festival is more or less exactly the same as Ållsang På Skansen – lots of people gather in an outdoor park and singalong to old and new schlager hits which are being performed on stage by different Scandinavian singers. The only differences really are that Liseberg is in Gothenburg, and Skansen is in Stockholm – plus the former is done by TV4, and the latter by SVT.

With Liseberg being in Gothenburg, we probably won’t be able to attend any of the shows. But people living in Sweden can watch them on television, and everyone else in the world can usually catch the performances on youtube by the following day.

Here’s the line up for each of the shows;

21/6 Sommardängor
