Over the weekend, the Finns went and picked their entry to the Eurovision Song Contest. And out of ten choices (you can hear them all here), they went for ‘Blackbird’ by the duo Norma John. In the end, it came down to a good song being performed very well – which is what swung it for ‘Blackbird’. There were a few songs that we rated higher based on their studio recording, but whom were let down by somewhat lacklustre performances. ‘Blackbird’ – a stark and ethereal ballad – deservedly won both the televote and the jury vote, and will compete in the semi-finals of Eurovision in May. Finland are the first Nordic nation to have chosen their entry.
